Our Statement on U.S. Tariff Announcement – April 2, 2025

The Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) acknowledges the recent announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump on April 2, 2025, imposing a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada, with a reduced 10% tariff on Canadian energy products. These measures are poised to significantly impact Manitoba’s economy, particularly within our Black business community.

Implications for BMCC Members:

  • Increased Operational Costs:
The tariffs are expected to raise the cost of exporting goods to the U.S., affecting profitability and pricing strategies for businesses reliant on cross-border trade.
  • Supply Chain Disruptions:
Members with supply chains extending into the U.S. may face delays and increased expenses, necessitating a re-evaluation of logistics and supplier relationships.
  • Market Access Challenges:
The heightened trade barriers could lead to reduced competitiveness in the U.S. market, potentially resulting in decreased sales and market share.

Government Initiatives:

In response to these developments, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has announced a $1.5 million investment to assist local manufacturers in navigating the challenges posed by the U.S. tariffs. This funding aims to support businesses in diversifying markets, protecting jobs, and mitigating tariff impacts.

BMCC’s Call to Action:

The BMCC is committed to supporting our members through these uncertain times. We recommend the following steps:

  1. Market Diversification:
Explore opportunities beyond the U.S. to reduce dependency on a single market.
  2. Supply Chain Assessment:
Evaluate and adjust supply chains to minimize disruptions and identify alternative suppliers where necessary.
  3. Advocacy and Collaboration:
Engage with industry associations and government bodies to stay informed and contribute to policy discussions.
  4. Financial Planning:
Review financial strategies to manage increased costs and consider available government support programs.

The Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide resources, workshops, and advocacy to assist our members in navigating these challenges. We stand in solidarity with Manitoba’s business community and are dedicated to fostering resilience and growth during this period of economic uncertainty.
