Staying Vigilant: Protecting Our Community from Telephone Scams

At the Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), we are committed to empowering Black and immigrant business leaders across Manitoba by fostering a supportive environment where everyone can thrive. Part of that commitment means keeping our community informed about potential threats that could impact your personal and professional well-being. Today, we’re highlighting an important alert from the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) regarding a emerging telephone scam that’s targeting residents in our area. By staying aware and united, we can protect ourselves and each other, ensuring our focus remains on growth and collaboration.

Understanding the Scam

On September 1, 2025, the WPS Communications Centre began receiving reports from concerned individuals who had been contacted by callers falsely claiming to represent the Winnipeg Police Service. These imposters are attempting to deceive people into sharing sensitive personal information or even sending money. This type of fraud preys on trust in authority figures, making it particularly insidious for busy entrepreneurs and community members who might be caught off guard during a hectic day.

It’s crucial to remember: Legitimate law enforcement agencies, including the WPS, will never contact you by phone to request personal details, financial information, or payments. If you receive such a call, it’s a red flag for fraudulent activity.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Business

As a chamber dedicated to equity, inclusion, and economic empowerment, BMCC encourages all members to take proactive steps to safeguard against these scams. Here’s some practical advice drawn from the WPS guidance:

  • Hang Up Immediately: If the call seems suspicious, end it right away. Don’t engage or provide any information.
  • Verify Independently: If you’re unsure, contact the WPS directly using official numbers from their website (not any provided by the caller).
  • Report the Incident: Alert the police about the suspicious call. This helps track patterns and prevent further victimization in our community.
  • Educate Your Network: Share this information with your team, family, and fellow business owners. Knowledge is a powerful tool for collective defense.

Scams like this can disproportionately affect immigrant communities and small business owners who are building their futures here in Manitoba. By staying informed, we not only protect our individual assets but also strengthen the resilience of our entire network.
