Small Business Month: Celebrating Entrepreneurs and Strengthening Manitoba’s Business Community

Behind every small business is someone who decided to turn an idea into action. October’s Small Business Month offers an opportunity to recognize that effort and consider how we can support entrepreneurs in our communities.

For the Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), this means recognizing Black entrepreneurs and business owners, encouraging meaningful connections, and supporting a business environment where more people can participate and succeed.

Business connections begin with a purpose

Running a business can involve making difficult decisions without having someone nearby to discuss them with. A network of fellow entrepreneurs, professional contacts, and community organizations can give owners a place to exchange ideas and ask questions.

In its article “Build a network to grow your business,” the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) recommends identifying business goals before choosing networking opportunities. The article also explains how relationships with other entrepreneurs can provide opportunities to share experiences and work through challenges.

For a Manitoba entrepreneur, the starting point might be finding a potential collaborator, learning about an unfamiliar market, or meeting other owners who understand a particular business challenge. Knowing the purpose makes it easier to choose where to spend time and which conversations to follow up on.

Recognizing Black entrepreneurship

Small Business Month is an opportunity to recognize the work of Black entrepreneurs across Manitoba and make their businesses more visible.

A business spotlight can introduce the owner, explain what they offer, and tell customers how to reach them. Sharing an entrepreneur’s story can also give aspiring owners a more personal view of the business journey, including the work and learning behind it.

BMCC’s mission centres on advocacy and sustainable, equitable economic development, with a focus on Black entrepreneurs and immigrant business leaders. Its membership is open to people of all backgrounds. Through this approach, the Chamber connects recognition with a broader commitment to participation and opportunity.

Support can take many forms

Supporting a small business does not always require a large purchase. An honest review can help a potential customer make a decision. A recommendation can introduce a business to someone who needs its services. Sharing an owner’s post can help more people discover what they offer.

Business owners can support one another, too. Making an introduction, exchanging practical experience, or exploring a collaboration can create useful connections. These actions are most meaningful when they respond to what a business actually needs.

During October, consider asking a local owner: “What is one way our community could support your business?”

Take one step toward a stronger network

Entrepreneurs can use Small Business Month to take a manageable step toward their goals. That might mean attending a relevant event, reconnecting with a business contact, or exploring an entrepreneurship program.

BDC’s networking guidance encourages owners to be intentional about their connections. A practical way to apply that advice is to choose one goal for the month and identify one conversation that could help move it forward.

BMCC provides a place to explore business connections, events, and resources. Entrepreneurs interested in learning more can also explore Ubuntu Forward™ and review the program’s current information.

Celebrate through action

This October, let’s recognize the people building businesses across Manitoba and turn that recognition into practical support.

Shop locally when you can. Recommend a business you trust. Share an entrepreneur’s story with their permission. Make a useful introduction.

Small businesses are part of our community. Helping people discover and support them is something we can all contribute to.
