BMCC Responds to President Trump’s Tariffs: Impact on Black-Owned Businesses and Minority Communities
Saturday’s announcement of a 25% tariff on Canadian goods by the United States is a direct challenge to businesses across Canada, with Black-owned businesses in Manitoba uniquely vulnerable due to their reliance on U.S. imports for raw materials. While retaliatory measures are in place, the Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) recognizes that many of our members will face significant disruptions and we are committed to ensuring their needs are not overlooked.
In moments like this, Black-owned businesses often bear a disproportionate burden, with limited access to capital, fewer alternatives for supplies, and structural barriers to market diversification. BMCC is fully aware of these challenges and stands ready to provide critical support, advocacy, and guidance to navigate this crisis.
We look forward to working closely with the Government of Manitoba to address the unique and urgent cases of Black-owned businesses, ensuring they are included in recovery plans and policy responses. Too often, these businesses are forgotten in larger economic strategies, but BMCC will not let them be left behind.
Our Call to Action: Support, Diversify, and Empower
We are calling on Black-owned businesses to reach out to BMCC for assistance in identifying new markets, alternative suppliers, and financing options. Together, we will:
✅ Provide one-on-one coaching and business development support to help affected businesses create contingency plans.
✅ Advocate for direct financial support and relief for those impacted by supply chain disruptions.
✅ Work with government leaders to ensure Black-owned businesses have a voice at the table in discussions of long-term solutions.
As we face this challenge together, we also call on all Manitobans to support local businesses. By prioritizing Manitoba-made products and services, we can minimize the impact of these tariffs and promote local growth and resilience.
The BMCC is more than a network—it is a movement for economic justice and sustainable prosperity. Black-owned businesses are essential contributors to Manitoba’s economy, and we will work tirelessly to protect their growth, sustainability, and success during this critical period and beyond.
