Re: Manitoba Government’s Introduction of Legislation to Eliminate Interprovincial Trade Barriers
The Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) applauds the Manitoba Government on the introduction of Bill 47 – The Fair Trade in Canada Act, a bold and forward-thinking move to eliminate interprovincial trade barriers and unlock new economic opportunities across our province and nation.
This legislation represents more than a policy shift, it is a signal of progress and partnership. It acknowledges that Manitoba’s prosperity is tied not only to local growth, but to our ability to scale, trade, and thrive as active players in the broader Canadian economy.
By embracing mutual recognition and working in alignment with other provinces and territories, Manitoba is paving the way for a more competitive and collaborative national marketplace. This is especially significant for Black-owned businesses and other underrepresented entrepreneurs, many of whom face additional structural and geographic barriers when expanding across provincial lines.
We are particularly encouraged by the government’s commitment to co-operation, inclusion, and the creation of a more resilient economic foundation for Manitoba workers and business owners alike.
The BMCC also celebrates the proclamation of June 1 as Buy Manitoba, Buy Canadian Day, a meaningful reminder that investing in local and diverse entrepreneurship is a critical step toward sustainable economic justice.
We thank Minister Jamie Moses, and the Manitoba Government, for championing a vision that aligns with our mission to build economic equity and access for all. We look forward to continued collaboration as this legislation moves forward and as we work together to foster inclusive growth across Manitoba and Canada.
In solidarity and enterprise,
Dr. Zita Somakoko
