Mrs. Monica Chertock is a trailblazing leader in Canadian law enforcement whose career has been defined by excellence, courage, and lasting impact. On February 1, 1988, she made history as the first Black female officer to join the Winnipeg Police Service, becoming the first Black female police officer in both the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba. Over a distinguished 25 year career, she broke barriers, raised standards, and helped shape a more inclusive and accountable future in policing.

Throughout her service, Mrs. Chertock held important roles across frontline policing, public communication, policy development, and organizational leadership. As Public Information Officer, she served as a trusted bridge between the police service and the community, representing the organization with professionalism, clarity, and compassion. She also played a leading role in the Winnipeg Police Service’s international CALEA reaccreditation, overseeing compliance with more than 464 standards and directing the development of over 200 policy directives. This work reflected her precision, discipline, and commitment to operational excellence.

In recognition of her outstanding service, Mrs. Chertock was awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal by the Governor General of Canada in 2008. This national honour reflected not only her years of dedicated service, but also the high standard of leadership she brought to every role.

Since retiring in 2013, Mrs. Chertock has continued to make an impact as an Associate at L.J. Craig and Associates, where she mentors, coaches, and trains law enforcement and legal professionals. Through this work, she continues to help shape the next generation of leadership in policing and public service.
