Manitoba Small Business Month is a time to recognize the entrepreneurs, creators, service providers, and business owners who continue to shape this province through their work, commitment, and resilience.
For the Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce, this month carries meaningful importance. Our work is rooted in advancing Black business leadership, economic inclusion, and community empowerment. At the same time, our doors remain open to every entrepreneur, professional, and business owner who is working to build, grow, and contribute to Manitoba’s economy.
What It Takes to Run a Small Business
Every small business begins with a decision to build something.
For many entrepreneurs, that decision comes with risk, sacrifice, long hours, and uncertainty. It means learning as you go, solving problems quickly, and carrying responsibilities that often stretch far beyond one job title.
A small business owner may be the founder, marketer, bookkeeper, customer service representative, operations lead, and decision maker all in the same day. Much of that work happens quietly, often without the recognition it deserves.
But the impact is real.
Small businesses create local employment. They keep money circulating in communities. They introduce new products, services, and ideas. They reflect the creativity, culture, and lived experiences of the people who run them.
When small businesses grow, the benefits are felt beyond the business itself. Families are supported. Employees gain opportunities. Communities become stronger.
Why Inclusive Business Support Matters
Entrepreneurship can be a powerful pathway to economic independence, leadership, and community impact. But access to that pathway is not equal for everyone.
Many business owners bring strong ideas, valuable skills, and clear vision, yet still face barriers that make growth harder. These barriers can include limited access to funding, mentorship, business networks, procurement opportunities, and visibility.
For Black and immigrant entrepreneurs, newcomers, women, youth, and other underrepresented business owners, these challenges are often intensified by systems that were not built with equal access in mind.
That is why inclusive business support matters.
Entrepreneurs need more than encouragement. They need practical knowledge, trusted relationships, access to opportunities, and spaces where their work is recognized and taken seriously.
BMCC exists to equip, serve, and support business leaders and communities through advocacy, education, training, mentorship, and economic development. Our goal is to help create stronger pathways for entrepreneurs to grow with confidence, connection, and support.
Supporting Local Is Community Building
Supporting small businesses does not always require a large action.
A purchase matters. A referral matters. A review matters. Sharing a business online matters. Making an introduction matters. Inviting a business owner into a room, opportunity, partnership, or conversation can make a real difference.
Individually, these actions may seem small. Collectively, they help businesses gain visibility, build credibility, reach new customers, and create stability.
When we support local businesses, we support the people behind them. We support their families, their employees, their suppliers, and the communities they continue to serve.
Small business success is not separate from community success. The two are deeply connected.

Entrepreneurs need stronger pathways to growth. That includes access to business education, mentorship, capital, procurement opportunities, professional networks, and practical resources that help businesses become more stable and sustainable.

A stronger business community requires collaboration. Business owners, customers, community organizations, institutions, and partners all have a role to play in building an environment where entrepreneurs can succeed.
