Minister John Fleury is remembered as a proud Métis Veteran, public servant, and community leader whose life was defined by service, leadership, and dedication to his people. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1977 to 1982, beginning with Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry at CFB Shilo and later serving in Infantry Signals at CFB Calgary. His military service reflected discipline, loyalty, and a deep commitment to Canada.

After completing his time in uniform, John continued serving the public through the RCMP in Thompson, Manitoba. His commitment to service later found lasting expression in Métis governance, where he became a respected voice and advocate within the Manitoba Métis Federation, National Government of the Red River Métis.

For more than five decades, Minister Fleury dedicated himself to advancing the Red River Métis Nation. He served 25 years on Cabinet and held the role of Minister of Métis Employment and Training. Through his work on provincial advisory committees and as a representative of the Red River Métis Veterans Working Group, he helped ensure that lived experience shaped policy and that the voices of Métis Veterans were heard.

John Fleury is also remembered as a devoted husband, father, and steward of culture, opportunity, and community. Though he has passed, his legacy continues through the lives he touched, the communities he served, and the example of service he leaves behind.
