Black History Month is a time for reflection, recognition, and renewed commitment to justice, unity, and progress. This year, the University of Manitoba marked a historic milestone as the Pan-African flag was raised on campus for the first time at a Western Canadian university.
Organized by the Black Student Community, this powerful moment served as both a celebration of shared roots and a reaffirmation of the enduring presence, culture, and contributions of Black communities within academic spaces and beyond.
A Historic Pan-African Flag Raising
The flag raising took place at the front of the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) University Centre, symbolizing unity across the African diaspora and honouring generations whose resilience and leadership continue to shape society today.
The Pan-African flag stands as a reminder of collective identity, strength, and the ongoing pursuit of equity. For students, faculty, and community members in attendance, the ceremony created space to reflect on history while looking forward with purpose.
A Call to Be Seen, Heard, and United
Beyond the ceremony itself, the gathering was a call to solidarity. It invited participants to stand together, uplift one another, and affirm that Black voices, experiences, and contributions matter on campus and across all sectors of society.
The event emphasized the importance of creating inclusive environments where Black communities are not only acknowledged but actively supported and empowered.
Black History Month Rally and Community Reflection
In addition to the flag raising, a Black History Month rally was held at the UMSU University Centre, bringing together students and allies for a day of learning, dialogue, and collective reflection. The rally focused on remembering the past, empowering the present, and building a stronger, more equitable future.
These moments of gathering reinforce the importance of visibility, representation, and sustained action throughout the year—not just during Black History Month.
