The sole French-language debate featured the leaders of Canada’s major federal parties:
– Mark Carney (Liberal Party)
– Pierre Poilievre (Conservative Party)
– Jagmeet Singh (New Democratic Party)
– Yves-François Blanchet (Bloc Québécois)
The debate focused on critical issues such as the economy, healthcare, and national unity. However, the discussions primarily centered around Quebec-specific concerns.
A major observation from the debate was the lack of attention to Francophone communities residing outside Quebec. These communities—especially in Ontario, Manitoba, and New Brunswick—play a key role in Canada’s cultural and linguistic diversity. However, their unique challenges and contributions were virtually absent from the discussion.
From the perspective of the Bilingual Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), the debate reflects a broader issue of underrepresentation:
– Lack of mention of Black entrepreneurs: No leader addressed systemic barriers faced by Black-owned businesses, such as access to capital, procurement, and tailored support programs.
– Absence of inclusive economic policies: There was no mention of measures to ensure recovery plans are equitable and inclusive of marginalized communities, including Black Francophones outside Quebec.
– Call for national dialogue: BMCC urges federal leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue about the recognition and support of Black Canadian communities in all their diversity.
Following the debate, BMCC President Dr. Zita Somakoko spoke to CBC Radio-Canada to share the Chamber’s reaction and concerns. In the interview, Dr. Somakoko highlighted the importance of recognizing Francophone Black communities outside Quebec and called for inclusive policies that reflect the full diversity of Canada.
