Technology has changed the way we live, connect, and do business—but it also comes with new risks, especially for young people. One growing concern is real-time location sharing on social media. While it may seem like an exciting way for teens to connect with friends, it can also expose them to serious threats.
Canada’s national tipline, Cybertip.ca, warns that platforms like Instagram and Snapchat are increasingly being used to track youth through location-sharing features. This can leave young people vulnerable to exploitation, manipulation, and even sextortion.
As a Chamber dedicated to strengthening Black families, businesses, and communities in Manitoba, we believe awareness is the first step toward protection.
Creating open conversations with youth about online safety is key. Here are a few steps you can take today:
Start the conversation: Ask if your teen has location sharing turned on.
Understand the “who and why”: Talk about who they’re sharing with and the importance of setting boundaries.
Discuss the risks: Help them recognize how strangers or even acquaintances could misuse this information.
Review settings together: Sit down and adjust privacy settings on apps and phones to disable unnecessary location tracking.
Encourage smart choices: Remind them to only share their location with trusted friends or family—not with social media followers they don’t know personally.
