On Friday, December 5, 2025, the Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) was honoured to attend the African Community Meet & Greet in Brandon, Manitoba, an inspiring evening hosted by the Global African Diaspora Network & Resource Mobilization Initiative (GADNRMI) and the African community in Brandon and surrounding areas. The event took place at the Clarion Hotel & Suites and brought together leaders, families, students, professionals, and community builders for a vibrant celebration of culture, unity, and collaboration.
According to the official invitation, the purpose of the gathering was to “strengthen community bonds, foster collaboration between newcomers, residents, community leaders, and partners as we share our vision of unity, diversity, and inclusion.”
The evening featured a powerful blend of African and Canadian cuisines, traditional music and dance, fashion and headgear exhibitions, and recognition of community champions including leaders from Virgin FC Soccer Club and various African-led organizations. BMCC was grateful to witness the pride, excellence, and cultural richness displayed throughout the night.
Dr. Zita’s Speech: A Message of Empowerment and Collective Progress
BMCC President and Founder Dr. Zita Somakoko delivered a deeply inspiring address that resonated with all in attendance. She spoke passionately about the role of BMCC in strengthening Manitoba’s Black business ecosystem, uplifting entrepreneurs, and building capacity through education, advocacy, and shared resources.
She highlighted the impact of ACEE (African Community Economic Empowerment) initiatives and emphasized the importance of economic pathways for African and Black communities across Manitoba especially in regions like Brandon, where newcomer settlement and entrepreneurship are rapidly growing.
A key message from her speech:
- Community is our foundation. When we uplift one another, all our communities rise.
- Economic empowerment is essential. Our families, youth, and newcomers thrive when they have access to tools, training, and networks.
- Collaboration is our greatest strategy. Partnerships like this one with GADNRMI help us strengthen unity across Manitoba’s diverse African diaspora.
Her words reinforced BMCC’s commitment to being present, supportive, and accessible to communities across the province not only in Winnipeg.
A Night of Connection, Recognition & Celebration
Throughout the evening, BMCC engaged with key community leaders, local organizations, youth advocates, and business owners who are shaping the future of Brandon’s African community. The level of hospitality, pride, and unity displayed reaffirmed the strength and potential of our diaspora communities outside major urban centers.
