The United States’ latest decision to impose a 10% tariff on softwood lumber and a 25% tariff on kitchen cabinets and upholstered furniture is not just punitive. It is a blatant provocation that undermines decades of economic cooperation and violates the spirit of the Canada-U.S. partnership.
These retaliatory tariffs, levied on sectors already burdened by trade barriers, will hurt families, destroy jobs, and further destabilize the cross-border supply chains that our continental economy depends on. Canadian exporters, many of whom have invested billions in the U.S. market, are once again caught in the crossfire of politicized trade tactics.
This is not partnership. This is economic coercion.
The Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce calls on the Government of Canada to take an uncompromising stand. Ottawa must demand immediate consultations under CUSMA, pursue all available dispute resolution mechanisms, and make it clear that these actions are unacceptable.
We urge the federal government to defend Canadian workers and industries with resolve, not caution.
Stability will not return to North American trade until the U.S. is held accountable to its commitments. Businesses on both sides of the border are out of room and out of patience. It is time for Canada to lead with strength.
