FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER 2025

BMCC Black History Month 2025 : Legacy in Action

Join us as we celebrate “Legacy in Action: Building the Future, Honoring the Past”—a tribute to the contributions of People of African Descent and a call to action for justice, equity, and economic empowerment.

This year, we shine a spotlight on the Second International Decade of People of African Descent, as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly. Our focus is to honor the invaluable contributions of People of African Descent throughout history while championing actionable steps toward justice, equity, and economic empowerment.

We are also proud to host the Second Edition of the BMCC BIPOC Veterans Award. This award celebrates the sacrifices and contributions of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color veterans who have served with distinction and helped shape our communities. This year, we continue to honour their resilience, dedication, and impact on justice and freedom.

We are thrilled to welcome Nadine Williams, a Jamaican-Canadian and 4-time Multi-Award-Winning Poet, Author, Advocate, and Educator, as our distinguished keynote speaker. A passionate champion of the UN proclamation of the Second Decade of People of African Descent, Nadine’s inspiring voice and artistic vision seamlessly blend heritage, progress, and community impact. Her acclaimed art piece, “The Fabric of Our Being,” a profound exploration of identity and legacy, will be exhibited at various venues across Manitoba starting February 2025, embodying the very essence of her commitment to turning heritage into meaningful action.

Join us in celebrating the profound intersection of history, culture, and progress. Together, we’ll continue to build a legacy that paves the way for a brighter future.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH WELLNESS

Topic: Racial Trauma & Healing for the Black Community

Despite the efforts to support Canadians from African Descent and their mental health concerns, there remain hardships in accessing the necessary social, psychiatric, or psychological services that are culturally relevant.

On February 21st, 2025, we encourage audience members, to appreciate knowledge from our guest speaker Patrick Tshivo, Clinical Therapist and Executive Director of Winnipeg RE/ACT Inc, and experience an open and thought-provoking group discussion to educate and empower ourselves.

The conversation focuses on providing People from African descent and the broader community with the opportunity to talk about Racial Trauma and it impacts openly, safely and respectfully with mental health professionals. By creating a safe space for people from African descent, to speak about their respected racial trauma lived experiences, we are building a healthier, safer and inclusive society for all.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH – A Journey With Manitoba Black Settlers

Let’s journey together!

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”- MARCUS GARVEY

“If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree. The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history. History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme.” – MICHAEL CRICHTON

Summary of the BMCC Christmas Networking Party

Back in December 2024, the Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) hosted the BMCC Christmas Networking Party, a festive and inspiring event that brought together entrepreneurs, professionals, and partners from Manitoba’s Black community.

This evening provided a unique opportunity to network, exchange ideas, and celebrate the year’s achievements in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A highlight of the event was the award ceremony, recognizing the dedication and outstanding accomplishments of community members.

In addition to honorary distinctions, several prizes were won through raffles, including gift cards, gourmet baskets, and exclusive experiences offered by local businesses.

The BMCC Christmas Networking Party was a great success, strengthening community ties and highlighting the importance of mutual support for economic and social development.
