On March 1, 2025, the Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) hosted a powerful evening of recognition, unity, and gratitude at the BMCC BIPOC Veterans Award. This annual celebration honors exceptional BIPOC veterans from the Military, Navy, and Police, shining a spotlight on their dedication, sacrifice, and contributions to Canada.
This year’s event was more than just an awards ceremony—it was a tribute to the trailblazers, the heroes of color, pioneering women in service, and Indigenous elders who have defended our country with unwavering courage. An evening of celebration, reflection, and community spirit unfolded, featuring heartfelt speeches, a captivating musical performance, and a shared meal that brought together leaders, veterans, and supporters in a profound atmosphere of appreciation.
As BMCC continues its mission to uplift and honor those who have paved the way, this event stood as a testament to the resilience, leadership, and invaluable contributions of BIPOC veterans. Stay with us as we take a deeper look into the stories, highlights, and impactful moments from this unforgettable night.
WELCOME SPEECH - GREETINGS
This event began with an opening prayer, followed by the Black National Anthem and the Canadian National Anthem. A land acknowledgment was made to honor Indigenous peoples, before concluding with a blessing for the success and prosperity of all participants. A moment of gathering, respect, and celebration.
SHOWING OF THE DOCUMENTARY
In Canada, Black Soldiers also played an important role during World War II, although their contributions were largely overlooked. Despite racial discrimination limiting opportunities for Black Canadians, many volunteered to join the armed forces. Many served in non-combat units, such as the Black Canadian Infantry Regiment, or in support roles. Some fought alongside the Allies, particularly in Europe, and contributed to the liberation of territories occupied by the Nazis. However, their service and sacrifices remained largely unrecognized for many years, and it is only recently that their stories have begun to be acknowledged and celebrated. These Black soldiers showed immense courage and unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom, despite the racial barriers they faced.
LEGACY AWARDS CEREMONY
One of the evening’s highlights was the award ceremony, where we had the privilege of recognizing the outstanding contributions of distinguished veterans. We were honored to celebrate the service of First Nation Veterans Justin Woodcock and Angela Brass, Métis Veterans Devin Beaudry and Shauna Mulligan, Indigenous Elder Veteran Bill Shead, Trailblazing Female Veteran Sharlene Harding, Police Veterans Devon Clunis and Dale McDonald, and Veterans of Color Pedro Correia and Jon Reyes, each of whom made significant contributions in the Military, Navy, and Police Force. Their dedication and sacrifices have left a lasting impact, and it was a true honor to recognize them for their service.
