A Night of Unity and Honor for BIPOC Veterans

On March 1, 2025, the Black Manitobans Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) hosted a powerful evening of recognition, unity, and gratitude at the BMCC BIPOC Veterans Award. This annual celebration honors exceptional BIPOC veterans from the Military, Navy, and Police, shining a spotlight on their dedication, sacrifice, and contributions to Canada.

This year’s event was more than just an awards ceremony—it was a tribute to the trailblazers, the heroes of color, pioneering women in service, and Indigenous elders who have defended our country with unwavering courage. An evening of celebration, reflection, and community spirit unfolded, featuring heartfelt speeches, a captivating musical performance, and a shared meal that brought together leaders, veterans, and supporters in a profound atmosphere of appreciation.

As BMCC continues its mission to uplift and honor those who have paved the way, this event stood as a testament to the resilience, leadership, and invaluable contributions of BIPOC veterans. Stay with us as we take a deeper look into the stories, highlights, and impactful moments from this unforgettable night.

History

William Forbes Alloway, a prominent banker, established The Winnipeg Foundation in 1921. With his gift of $100,000, Alloway established Canada’s first community foundation and fulfilled his vision of an organization, built by everyday Winnipeggers, that will support our community forever.

A modest, anonymous donation of three gold coins worth fifteen dollars reminds us that every act of generosity matters, no matter the size. Over the years, thousands of donors have collectively contributed hundreds of millions of dollars toward local charitable projects that help individuals thrive, strengthen families, and build our community.

Community foundations like The Winnipeg Foundation are public charitable organizations where gifts, large and small, are pooled and permanently invested. The interest earned from these endowments generates sustainable support for local projects. In 2024 alone, the foundation received 8,347 gifts and distributed $91.6 million to community causes.

By offering multiple ways to give—whether it’s to a community fund, in honor or memory of a loved one, or by starting your own fund—the foundation invites everyone to support the causes they care about. With a dedicated team of generosity advisors and a collaborative, community-led approach, The Winnipeg Foundation ensures that your gift makes an enduring impact on Winnipeg today, tomorrow, and forever.

Our Stand Against President Trump’s Tarrifs

New Tariffs updates

Current Tariff Landscape

President Trump’s tariff policies have been active, with several measures already in place. As of April 1, 2025, the following tariffs are effective:

Detailed Breakdown

As of April 1, 2025, several tariff measures are already in effect, based on recent reports and official announcements:

  • Canada and Mexico:
    • On February 1, 2025, Trump announced 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, effective February 4, 2025, under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), citing national security threats from drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
    • These tariffs faced a 30-day suspension for Canada, taking effect on March 4, 2025. However, exemptions were later granted for goods compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), lasting until April 2, 2025, as noted in an NPR article (Trump’s latest tariff twist: A break for Mexico and Canada).
    • Specifics include tariffs on steel, aluminum, and other goods, with energy resources from Canada facing a lower 10% tariff.

The economic impact of these tariffs has been significant, with reports indicating higher prices for consumers and businesses, particularly in sectors like autos, where parts crossing borders multiple times could see costs rise by $4,000–$10,000 per vehicle, according to the BBC (What are tariffs, why is Trump using them, and will prices rise?).

Anticipated Announcement on April 2, 2025: “Liberation Day”

The most recent development is the planned announcement on April 2, 2025, which Trump has dubbed “Liberation Day.” This event, confirmed to occur in the White House Rose Garden, will feature the unveiling of “reciprocal tariffs” on global trading partners, as stated by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on March 31, 2025, in multiple reports (Trump Tariff Announcement April 2 Will Take Place in Rose Garden Event – Bloomberg, WATCH: White House says Trump’s signing of ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs will be first Rose Garden event – PBS).

  • Details and Uncertainty: The tariffs are described as “country-based,” with no exemptions currently planned for nations imposing tariffs on U.S. goods, according to Leavitt. However, the exact rates, products, and countries affected remain unclear, creating uncertainty. A Politico article from March 30, 2025, highlights that even White House aides, including Vice President JD Vance and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, are unsure of the final plan (Even White House aides fear the fallout of Trump’s April 2 tariffs – POLITICO).
  • Scope and Intent: Reports suggest these tariffs could affect more than $1 trillion worth of trade, intended as a starting point for negotiations. Proposals include targeting 10–15 countries (termed the “dirty 15” by some advisers) or potentially all countries, with sectoral tariffs on pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, copper, and lumber possibly delayed, as noted in the same Politico article.
  • Market and Political Implications: The announcement has already caused market jitters, with fears of inflation and economic strain, especially given recent data showing higher-than-expected inflation rates. Politically, there are concerns about losing congressional majorities in midterms, with internal divisions between broad tariff supporters like Peter Navarro and Howard Lutnick, and those favoring narrower approaches like Scott Bessent.

Economic and Social Impact

Economists fear these tariffs could spark a trade war, leading to higher consumer prices, as seen in past examples like a 34% increase in laundry equipment prices due to tariffs on washing machines between 2018 and 2023, according to the BBC article. The New York Times reported on March 19, 2025, that Trump’s tariffs have already sown uncertainty, dampening business investment and consumer sentiment (Trump’s Tariffs Have Sown Uncertainty. That Might Be the Point. – The New York Times).
